Shape from Metric
Given an abstract surface and its metric what is its shape? This question does not have a unique (or even necessarily any) answer when studied in mathematics. Yet for triangle meshes as used in computations we find that one can meaningfully assign a shape to the triangle mesh in 3D using only desired edge lengths (and in particular no vertex positions). In this talk I will cover the basic ideas underlying our approach and show relevant application examples.
