Abstract
“EXPERIMENTAL STRUCTURES” is a design studio, held annually at the Chair of Structural Design, Department of Architecture, Technische Universität München. Eike Schling presents insights and research from the last two years.
Freeform design enhances the architectural vocabulary and allows an efficient spatial load-transfer. But challenges arise in the construction of double-curved surfaces. From planning to assembly, every component must be tailored to its unique requirements.
We propose a bottom-up approach:
- How much curvature can be generated using identical modules?
- How much more, if elasticity and tolerance are considered?
- And does the resulting shape improve the load-bearing behavior?
Our goal is to find a symbiosis of form, structure and fabrication. We first develop a module, aiming for simple manufacture but high rigidity. We then multiply and combine this module to create a self-supporting free-form structure.
Throughout this process, elastic formation drives curvature and stability.
