Digital twins, i.e., digital databases representing some aspects of our physical environment, are increasingly used in many application areas, from industry and traffic control to environmental monitoring. However, in most cases, the digital twin is used in a conventional desktop computing environment, which is spatially and semantically separated from the physical environment represented in the digital twin. For tasks that require being present at a certain location, augmented reality (AR) can be used as a new form of user interface for access to digital information bound to a particular location or object. This new form of interface is particularly attractive for active environments instrumented via the internet of things. This talk introduces the state of the art in acquiring, processing, and visualizing digital twin data in-situ.
