Talk by Shajay Bhooshan on Shape-design for 3D concrete printing, 11 May 2022: This presentation, motivated by the rapid growth in large-scale 3D concrete printing (3DCP), addresses the current lack of both computational design tools and integrated design-to-production (DTP) solutions for this fabrication technology. It is guided by a novel insight regarding the applicability of design and analysis methods developed for unreinforced masonry to large-scale, layered 3D printing with materials favouring compression such as concrete. The lecture will present the custom toolchain that enabled the integration of shape-design, structural engineering, and robotic concrete printing for the design, production, and construction of Striatus, a discrete, dry-assembled, fully unreinforced masonry foot bridge.

Shajay Bhooshan
is an Associate Director at Zaha Hadid Architects where he co-founded and heads the Computation and Design research group (ZHACODE). Shajay pursues his interests in manufacturing and structurally informed design technologies as a PhD candidate at the Block Research Group (BRG) at the ETH, Zurich and previously, as a M.Phil. graduate from the University of Bath, UK.
