Julian Jauk is going to talk about “Advancing 3D Printing of Clay in Architecture”
3D printing of ceramics started to gain ground in architecture over the past decades, yet digital fabrication of clay, allowing for material efficiency as well as unique aesthetics, is not as technologically advanced and standardized as concrete, wood or steel construction industries are. This presentation introduces a comprehensive dissertation that significantly advances the field of 3D printed clay in architecture. Supported by scientific results and full-scale architectural prototypes, it demonstrates the potential of 3D printed clay in the building industry and underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration to bridge the gap between research, industry, and art, positioning 3D printed clay as a viable and competitive manufacturing method in architectural design.
Julian Jauk studied Architecture at Graz University of Technology. His diploma thesis presents a kinetic and adaptive architectural design, which was exhibited at Ars Electronica Festival 2017. Since 2020, he has been serving as a project assistant at the Institute of Architecture and Media at Graz University of Technology. His research, conducted within the SFB Project “Advanced Computational Design,” focuses on the resource-efficient realization of complex geometrical shapes. In 2023, he developed and released “Termite,” a software plugin designed for 3D printing ceramics. His doctoral thesis, “Advancing 3D Printing of Clay,” highlights the significance of interdisciplinary collaboration in bridging the gap between research, industry, and art. Additionally, he is an active musician, music producer, and freelancer in architecture, art, audio, and video production.
