“Reimagining Sustainable Architecture: Digital Crafting & Bio-Based Innovations for a Climate-Neutral Future”
– The building industry accounts for approximately 45% of all extracted resources and nearly 40% of energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. While traditional materials like steel, concrete, and timber dominate construction, relying on slow-renewable forestry resources poses environmental risks, including deforestation and desertification.
This lecture explored how digitalization and additive manufacturing can revolutionize sustainable architecture by integrating annually renewable bio-based materials. Drawing on over a decade of research at BioMat, Prof. Dr. Hanaa Dahy will showcase innovative structural and non-structural applications of alternative materials for interior and exterior construction. The talk also highlighted the “Materials as a Design Tool” philosophy, demonstrating how material-driven design strategies can lead to climate-neutral architectural solutions.
